Itinerary for wildebeest migration safari

Fundamental Objective: Arusha Town

Driving Time: 1-hour driving

After arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a representative from Njofu Expeditions will welcome you and escort you to Arusha Maasai Camp for a delectable dinner and an overnight stay. Prior to settling into your tent for the evening, you will embark on a brief walk to kick off your wildlife exploration, which officially commences the following day.

Principal Objective: Tarangire  National  Park

Driving Time: 2 hours driving

Following breakfast, set out for Tarangire National Park, which is situated in Manyara Lokal and is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania. The park is renowned for its vast herds of elephants, tree-climbing lions, and magnificent baobabs – also known as the “Tree of Life” and associated by some societies with mystical powers. One of the park’s key features is the Tarangire River, which serves as a primary water source for wildlife during the dry season. Your game drive will conclude in the evening as you head to Twiga’s camping area to enjoy a scrumptious dinner and spend the night.

Primary Objective: Lake Manyara  National  Park

Driving Time: 1-hour driving

Once breakfast is finished, you will proceed to Manyara National Park for the next leg of your camping safari. This park is renowned for its exceptional tree-climbing lions, as well as its magnificent scenery, which is primarily composed of the expansive Lake Manyara and is occasionally visited by vast flocks of flamingos and a variety of other waterfowl. Along the lake’s shoreline, you will encounter a plethora of wildlife, including elephants, hippos, giraffes, buffaloes, impalas, mongooses, and deer. Following a thrilling day of wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and exploring the park’s diverse flora, retire to the Kudu camping area for a delectable dinner and a restful overnight stay.

Principal Objective: Ngorongoro Crater

Driving Time: 1-hour driving

Following breakfast, we will venture to Ngorongoro Crater – a conservation area that is dedicated to preserving the area’s wildlife and neighboring Maasai Mountains, where the Maasai people raise their cows in a close-to-nature manner. On our way to Ngorongoro, we’ll have the opportunity to observe some aspects of the Maasai way of life. Upon arriving at the entrance to the conservation area, we’ll pause to admire the awe-inspiring volcanic landscape before embarking on a walk along the entire rim of the crater, where we can gaze down and witness herds of wildebeest and buffalo. We will then proceed with the safari and set up camp within the crater. The crater’s walls provide a unique refuge for animals, meaning there’s an abundance of wildlife to behold, such as lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and with a bit of luck, even leopards. The only animal that you won’t encounter in this area is the giraffe, as their long legs cannot grip the soft terrain. Dinner and overnight accommodations will be provided at Ngorongoro Simba Camp.

Driving Time: 4-5hours driving

Accommodation: Seronera Public Camp site

Following breakfast, we’ll make our way to the renowned Serengeti National Park. Prior to arriving at the park, you’ll have the option to visit Olduvai Gorge for USD 35 per person, a walled valley where Louis and Mary Leakey made some of the world’s most significant archaeological discoveries during the 1950s. In a small gallery here, you’ll be able to witness evidence of our ancestors dating back 2.5 million years. After lunch, we’ll delve into the Serengeti, where we’ll spend the remainder of the day exploring the vast plains, dotted with acacia trees and the occasional kopi. During the months of December, February, and March, we tend to encounter herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles, but regardless of the time of year, there are numerous animals to be seen, including giraffes, buffalo, elephants, and predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards. In the evening, we’ll proceed to the Seronera General Camp for dinner and overnight accommodations.

Driving Time: 4-5hours driving

Following breakfast, you’ll embark on a journey towards the northern part of the Serengeti National Park, which is known for the thrilling spectacle of the Mara region. The prominent feature of this region is the Mara River, where vast herds of wildebeest cross over to the north and return southward after several days. It’s important to note that witnessing this phenomenon can be challenging, and sometimes it depends on luck. The area boasts of picturesque kopjes, forests, riverine vegetation, and vast open fields, resembling the Masai Mara plains in Kenya. You will spend the night at the Lobo Public Campsite, situated in the serene northern section of the Serengeti.

Principal Objective: Northern Serengeti  National  Park

Driving Time: Entire day game drive

We have an extra full day to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of this exceptional park, witnessing the thrill of lions in action. We’ll be in the midst of the action, sometimes surrounded by wildebeests, other times by zebras, who travel with the wildebeests. We’ll explore the vast open fields and volcanic kopjes, which offer shelter and a safe haven for a diverse collection of creatures. From the summit, we’ll gaze out over the stunning plains of the Serengeti, providing us with the ultimate wildlife viewing experience. We’ll see the big five animals: elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, lions, and if we’re lucky, the elusive leopard and cheetah. We’ll also encounter various fascinating bird species, ranging from the majestic secretary birds to the flightless ostrich. After the game drive, we’ll return to Lobo Public Camp in Northern Serengeti for dinner and overnight stay.

Driving Time: Entire day game drive

After having breakfast, depart to Lake Natron with a packed lunch, arriving in the early evening. Take a short walking tour of Lake Natron, which is known for being one of the primary breeding sites for flamingos. Later in the evening, visit a nearby waterfall, go for a dip in the river, and attend a brief social gathering with a Maasai family. Then, we will return to the campsite for dinner and overnight stay. At midnight, we will begin our ascent up the Oldoinyo Lengai peak, taking short breaks to rest during the climb.
