3 Days Mount Meru Trekking

Mount Meru, a prominent feature of Arusha National Park, is a must-visit for adventure seekers. Renowned for its breathtaking scenery, diverse ecosystems, and rich cultural significance, it offers a unique trekking experience.

3 Days Mount Meru Trekking Adventure

The trek to the summit of Mount Meru usually takes three days, though extending the journey to four days is highly recommended for better acclimatization. The route leads climbers through diverse landscapes, ranging from lush forests to alpine deserts, providing a perfect blend of nature and culture.

Highlights of the Trek:

  • Scenic Diversity: Experience a variety of ecosystems, each teeming with unique flora and fauna, as you ascend.
  • Walking Safari: Unlike Mount Kilimanjaro, trekking Mount Meru requires an armed ranger escort. This adds an adventurous edge as you pass through Arusha National Park, encountering wildlife such as African buffaloes, zebras, and playful black-and-white colobus monkeys.
  • Preparation for Kilimanjaro: Many climbers use Mount Meru as an acclimatization climb before tackling Mount Kilimanjaro.

The trek is a remarkable journey, blending the thrill of a walking safari with the serenity of Mount Meru’s less snowy volcanic landscapes.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha (1400m) – Miriakamba Hut (2500m)

Your adventure begins with an early breakfast in Arusha, after which you will be picked up from your hotel and driven to the Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. Upon arrival, the porters will organize and pack your belongings for the trek, while you and your guide complete the registration process with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA).

The hike begins with a scenic ascent through Arusha National Park, offering an experience akin to a walking safari. Along the trail, you can expect to encounter wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, antelopes, buffaloes, and possibly elephants. Due to the abundant wildlife, an armed ranger, provided by the National Park, will accompany your group throughout the hike for safety.

As you make your way up the trail, you’ll pass the Ngarenanyuki River and stop to admire a stunning waterfall at the base of Mount Meru. By late afternoon, you will arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2,500m), where your chef will prepare a hot dinner and provide washing water. End your day with a magnificent sunset before resting overnight at the hut.

  • Duration: 5–7 hours of hiking
  • Elevation Gain: 1,500m (4,921ft) to 2,500m (8,202ft)

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2500m) – Saddle Hut (3500m)

After breakfast, the trek continues with a steep ascent along the ridge of the saddle. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife as the trail offers stunning views of the Mt. Meru Crater and the Ash Tray.

Upon reaching Saddle Hut (3,500m), you’ll have the opportunity to embark on an optional hike to Little Mount Meru (3,820m) with your guide. This additional trek is ideal for acclimatization and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.

An early dinner will be served to ensure you get enough rest before your midnight summit attempt. Be sure to settle in and sleep by 19:00 to prepare for the challenge ahead.

  • Duration: 3–5 hours of hiking

Day 3: Saddle Hut (3500m) – Summit Attempt (4566m) – Miriakamba Hut (2500m)

Your guide will wake you at 12:30 AM to enjoy tea and biscuits before starting your summit attempt at 1:30 AM. The ascent begins with a steep climb from Rhino Point (3,800m) to Cobra Point (4,350m). The final stretch involves scrambling along a rocky ridge between the crater and the inner cliffs of Mount Meru.

You’ll reach the summit of Mount Meru (4,565m) at sunrise, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the Meru Ash Tray and Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. Take some time to soak in the breathtaking scenery before beginning your descent.
