Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp (1790m) (3010m)

At Njofu Expedition, we begin our journey with a scenic one-hour drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate. After completing the necessary paperwork, we meet our porters and set off on our adventure. The first section of the trail ascends steadily, leading us through a stunning, dense rainforest. This less-traveled path can sometimes be overgrown and is often wet and muddy, adding to the authentic trekking experience.

Total distance covered: 10.8 km (6.7 mi)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Included

Day 2: Shira Camp (3,010m) to Machame Camp (3010m) (3845m)

With Njofu Expedition, our journey continues upward through the lush forest, leading us to the steep ascent toward the Shira Plateau. Once we reach the plateau, we are rewarded with a stunning view of the majestic mountain. As you look back, you’ll be treated to the sight of Mt. Meru towering over Arusha town.

The trek covers a distance of 5.4 km (3.4 mi), and it typically takes about 5 hours to complete. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all included in the package.

Day 3: Shira Cave to Barranco Camp (3845m) (3960m)

Now that you’re trekking on the high moorland, the experience of the journey has truly transformed. With Njofu Expedition, we guide you around the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, beneath the Lava Tower, and past the final stretch of the Western Breach until we reach camp. We spend the day at a high altitude (up to 4600m), following the mountaineering principle of “walk high, sleep low,” allowing your body to adjust to the higher elevations.

All meals are included.

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3960m) to Barafu Camp (4640m)

At Njofu Expedition, we begin our day by descending into the Great Barranco, a vast gorge. From there, we make a steep climb up the Great Barranco Wall, which separates us from the southeast slopes of Kibo. Although challenging, the climb isn’t too difficult, but it is long and exhausting as we navigate through rocks. We trek beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, heading towards the Karanga Valley, our final source of fresh water before the summit. The terrain changes as we move across dry, barren land towards Barafu Camp, where the ground is covered in scree.

The distance covered is approximately 8.5 km (5.3 mi), and the hike takes about 8 hours.

All meals are included.

Day 5: From Barafu Camp (4640m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) and back down to Millennium Camp (3790m)

At Njofu Expedition, we begin our trek around midnight, climbing steeply toward the glaciers at the summit. For 4 to 5 hours, we ascend the scree, quickly gaining altitude. The breathtaking views along the way are unforgettable. As the first rays of sunlight touch us, we will be at Stella Point (5739m) on the crater rim, surrounded by magnificent ice cliffs. From here, the jagged Mawenzi peak and the expansive landscape offer a truly awe-inspiring sight. After a brief rest, we continue for another hour to reach Uhuru Peak (5895m).

Our descent starts with a return to Stella Point, followed by a journey down the scree slope to Barafu Camp for breakfast. We then proceed down to Millennium Camp, where we enjoy a long, well-deserved rest.

All meals are included.

Day 6: Walk from Millennium Camp (3,790m) to Mweka Gate (1630m)

At Njofu Expedition, we guide you on a gentle walk through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where we complete the park paperwork and present you with certificates that you can proudly display. Our vehicles will then transport you back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can unwind with a refreshing hot shower.

Relax and enjoy the night at Lindrin Lodge or Park View Hotel.

Last Day: Depart Tanzania

After your Kilimanjaro trek, you’ll have the rest of the day to unwind before your flight home. Depending on your flight time, you can visit Moshi town to pick up some souvenirs before heading to the airport. If you’re eager to explore more of Tanzania, Njofu Expedition offers the option to add on a safari, a Zanzibar trip, or other exciting adventures.

Breakfast is included.
