Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Tanzania
You’ll be warmly welcomed by our Njofu Expedition driver upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. There, you’ll meet your guide, who will brief you on your upcoming hike and check your gear to ensure you’re fully prepared for the mountain. Any missing gear can be rented on this day.
Enjoy an overnight stay at Lindrin Lodge or Park View Hotel, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.
Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp (1790m) (3010m)
At Njofu Expedition, we begin our adventure with a one-hour drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate, where we complete the necessary paperwork, meet our dedicated porters, and set off on our climb. The trail starts with a steady uphill ascent through a stunning, dense rainforest. Since this path is less frequented, it can be slightly overgrown in places and is often wet and muddy, adding to the thrill of the journey.
Distance Covered: 10.8 km (6.7 mi)
Estimated Duration: 6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included
Day 3: Shira Camp (3,010m) to Machame Camp (3010m) (3845m)
At Njofu Expedition, our journey continues upward through the enchanting forest, eventually leading to a steep ascent onto the breathtaking Shira Plateau. From this vantage point, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the mountain. Turning back, you’ll catch a glimpse of Mt. Meru towering majestically above Arusha town.
The trek covers a distance of 5.4 km (3.4 mi) and typically takes around 5 hours. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all included in our package.
Day 4: Shira Cave to Barranco Camp (3845m) (3960m)
Now that you’re walking on the high moorland, the entire feel of the trek shifts. At Njofu Expedition, we guide you around the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing beneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach, until we reach camp. We spend the day at high altitudes (up to 4600m), adhering to the mountaineering rule of “walk high, sleep low” to help your body acclimate to the elevation.
You will travel 10.8 km (6.7 mi) during the day.
The trek takes approximately 8 hours.
Included in the price are breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 5: Barranco Camp (3960m) to Barafu Camp (4640m)
At Njofu Expedition, we begin our day by descending into the Great Barranco, a vast gorge. From there, we tackle the steep ascent up the Great Barranco Wall, which separates us from the southeast slopes of Kibo. Although it’s not too difficult, it’s a long, tiring climb over rocky terrain. As we make our way toward the Karanga Valley, we pass beneath the majestic Heim and Kersten glaciers. This is the last place to replenish our water supply before heading to the top. We then traverse dry, barren land as we approach Barafu Camp, where the ground becomes a mixture of scree.
We cover a distance of about 8.5 km (5.3 mi), with the journey taking approximately 8 hours.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all included.
Day 6: From Barafu Camp (4640m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) and back down to Millennium Camp (3790m)
At Njofu Expedition, we begin our journey around midnight, ascending steeply toward the glaciers at the summit. The climb up the scree lasts for about 4 to 5 hours, but the rapid altitude gain offers incredible views. As the first rays of sunlight greet us, we reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m), where we’re surrounded by stunning ice cliffs and the breathtaking sight of Mawenzi Peak. After taking in the view, we continue for another hour to reach the summit at Uhuru Peak (5895m). Our descent begins back at Stella Point, followed by a scree slope down to Barafu Camp for a hearty breakfast. We’ll then continue our descent to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.
Distance traveled: 13.4 km (8.3 mi).
Duration: 12–15 hours.
The price includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 7: Walk from Millennium Camp (3,790m) to Mweka Gate (1630m)
Day 8: Depart Tanzania
After your Kilimanjaro trek, you’ll have the rest of the day to unwind before your flight home. Depending on your flight time, you may want to visit Moshi town to shop for souvenirs before heading to the airport. If you’re eager to continue exploring Tanzania, we at Njofu Expedition can help you add on a safari, a Zanzibar getaway, or other exciting adventures.
Breakfast is included.
