7 Days Great Wildebeest Migration Calving Safari
Njofu Expeditions offers an exclusive Tanzania Wildebeest Migration Safari and Calving package, specifically designed to focus on tracking the Great Serengeti Wildebeest migration during calving from December to April.
Exploring the Best Areas for Wildebeest Migration
The journey begins with a visit to the Lake Ndutu region, followed by the Southern and Central areas of Serengeti National Park, where most of the wildebeest are typically found. These regions are the best areas for observing the migration during the months of January, February, and March, where visitors can witness thousands of wildebeest spread across the fields, feeding on the rich short grass fields.
Spectacular Wildlife Sightings
In addition to the wildebeest migration, this package includes a visit to the popular Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara. Guests can expect to see a wide variety of wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the endangered black rhino), as well as cheetahs, hyenas, and other predators. On the second day of the Wildebeest Calving Safari with Njofu Expedition, we’ll start the day with breakfast before embarking on our journey to Tarangire National Park. To maximize your chances of spotting wildlife, we’ll begin with a game review in the recreation area. Tarangire is the 6th biggest national park in Tanzania, following Ruaha, Serengeti, Mikumi, Katavi, and Mkomazi. During our time here, we’ll enjoy activities such as an exhilarating wildlife game drive, where you might witness pythons climbing trees, as well as lions and leopards among others. Bird enthusiasts will have the opportunity to spot endemic species such as the bright yellow-collared lovebirds, and the more drab rufous-tailed weaver and ashy starling. These birds are unique to the dry Savannah of north-central Tanzania. Overnight at Marera valley lodge
Following breakfast, we will commence the next leg of our journey towards the Ndutu Area, situated in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which plays a crucial role in the southern Serengeti ecosystem. Lake Ndutu, much like other Fracture Valley lakes, is alkaline, but the water is still potable and consumed by a wide range of local wildlife. From December to April, most of the wildebeest migration can usually be found on the short-grass fields in this area, which is also heavily populated with elephants, birds, and resident games. We will spend the night at the Ndutu Heritage Tented Lodge after dinner.
Following breakfast, you will embark on a game drive in the Ndutu region of the Serengeti National Park to explore a diverse range of areas including swamps, forests, soda lakes, and the renowned Serengeti short-grass fields. This area is also known for the spectacular Wildebeest Migration, particularly during a short period from February lasting for about three weeks, where the majority of the wildebeest calves. The youth are particularly vulnerable to predators as the sea of grass provides little cover. However, wildebeest calves are born with the ability to run within minutes, and in at least three days, they can keep up with the crowd. Afterward, you’ll continue with the game review while heading to Serengeti Integral for dinner and an overnight stay. Enjoy the experience of the Serengeti Heritage Tented Lodge, where you can unwind after an exciting day on safari.
Experience a full day of game drive in the heart of the Serengeti National Park, famously known as Tanzania’s oldest and most iconic National Park. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and recently declared the seventh wonder of the world, the Serengeti is renowned for its annual Wildebeest Migration, where millions of hooves pound the open plains. This unique park offers a fascinating game-viewing experience unlike any other in Africa, allowing you to witness up-close the animals you’ve previously only seen in National Geographic: large herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephants and giraffes, and countless eland, topi, kongoni, impala, and Grant’s gazelle. Enjoy dinner and Overnight at Serengeti Heritage Tented Lodge.
After breakfast, continue your journey from Serengeti, enjoying game drives along the way as you head towards the Ngorongoro Crater for a crater tour. The Ngorongoro Crater is home to around 20 black rhinoceros, making it the best place in Tanzania to witness these incredible creatures. The crater floor also boasts one of the highest carnivore densities on earth. Game drives will continue until evening, where you will drive to Pamoja Africa Lodge for dinner and overnight stay. This is a great opportunity to witness the Wildebeest Migration and experience the natural beauty of Tanzania.
After breakfast, we will depart and head straight to Lake Manyara National Park. Later in the early evening, we will drive back to Arusha town. Lake Manyara National Park is known for its stunning beauty, and Ernest Hemingway himself claimed that it was “the loveliest” lake he had seen in Africa. The park provides a compact game-viewing circuit and is one of the most diverse reserves in the country. The lake, which covers two-thirds of the park, is set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Great Rift Valley. Over 400 species of birds can be found in Manyara, including thousands of pink flamingos during their annual migration, as well as other large water birds such as pelicans, cormorants, and storks. This will be the final day of the Tanzania Wildebeest Migration Safari. Please note that accommodation for the 7-day safari and calving are subject to availability. Overnight at Tulia Hotel
